Quick answerSame design, different size. The 207 is rated for 20 to 45 gallons with 121 GPH of real circulation; the 307 for 40 to 70 gallons with 206 GPH, per Fluval. If your tank is 40 to 45 gallons, or heavily stocked, the 307 gives more turnover and more media room. Below 40 gallons, the 207 is the fit.

Turnover math
Habitattitude says a pump should circulate the tank's volume "several times each hour." Using Fluval's circulation figures (our arithmetic):
- 207 on a 30 gallon tank: about 4 times an hour.
- 207 on a 45 gallon tank: about 2.7 times.
- 307 on a 45 gallon tank: about 4.6 times.
- 307 on a 70 gallon tank: about 2.9 times.
