Quick answerFor tanks up to about 35 gallons, a simple siphon like the Aqueon Medium 9 in. (rated 15 to 35 gallons) and a bucket does the job. For larger tanks, or if hauling buckets is a pain, a faucet water changer like the Python No Spill Clean and Fill drains and refills through a long hose. Either way, dose a water conditioner for the new water.

Water changes are a regular chore, and the right tool makes them quicker. Details below are from Aqueon's and Python's pages and the listings. We haven't tested them.

Siphon gravel cleaners

A wide tube pulls debris out of the gravel while draining water into a bucket. Aqueon's are self-priming: "Just a simple up and down motion with the intake tube will quickly prime the siphon," and they come with a 6 ft hose and bucket clip. Aqueon rates its Mini 5 in. for 1 to 5 gallons, and the Medium 9 in. is listed for 15 to 35 gallons. The Large model adds a priming bulb.

Faucet water changers

Python's No Spill Clean and Fill hooks to a faucet, drains the tank, then refills it, per the listing. Python's FAQ says to add "an effective water conditioner" during refill to remove "residual chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals." Python itself recommends small changes, "5 to 10% water change every other week," which is more conservative than some extension advice; see how often to change water.
