Releasing a pet fish can feel kind. It isn't, for the fish or for local waters. Here's what federal and state agencies say.
Why it's a problem
- Invasive species: USFWS: "When goldfish are released into local waterways they become an invasive species that can live for up to 25 years and do real harm to the water quality and wild fish communities."
- Fast breeding: Minnesota DNR: goldfish "reproduce rapidly and can quickly number in the hundreds or thousands," and populations there are "likely the result of people illegally releasing pet goldfish."
- Most released fish don't make it: CDC: "Most fish released into ponds or rivers will die, and some can threaten natural wildlife populations."
- Not just goldfish: Habitattitude notes lionfish now preying on native fish in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, and asks aquarists to choose plants that aren't invasive in their state.
What to do instead
UF's fact sheet on responsible ownership: "Do not release live exotic fish into the wild or dispose by flushing them down the toilet," and instead "attempt to return or exchange the unwanted animal at the pet shop, trade with another responsible aquarist or contact someone from your local aquarium society for help." Minnesota DNR adds: contact a veterinarian or pet retailer for guidance on humane disposal.
USFWS points to the Habitattitude and Don't Let It Loose programs for rehoming. If you spot a released or non-native fish in the wild, USGS runs a sighting report form.
Prevent it in the first place
- Check adult size before buying. Habitattitude: "What is its adult size? Will it outgrow the tank?"
- Give goldfish the room they need; see goldfish tanks.
- Stock within your tank's limits; see how many fish per tank.
